Tuesday Shoesday 4.5.16

Tuesday Shoesday 4.5.16

Guys, how gorgeous and feminine are these Giambattista Valli floral pumps? Between the cherry blossoms blooming in D.C. and the onset of spring weather, I'm totally swooning over these delicate shoes.

A Guide to Living Elegantly by Christian Dior

One of my favorite coffee table reads is The Little Dictionary of Fashion by Christian Dior. It’s an adorable tiny mauve book with simple black type face that takes you through the ABCs of fashion as told by Dior. It’s sweet and short and packed with sage advice for the modern woman. It’s message? Haute Couture is not just for the wealthy - it’s about elegance and the rules of fashion. So read on for my top five favorite pieces of advice for living elegantly from Christian Dior.

O N E: Good Planning is Very Necessary to Good Dressing.
Christian Dior Quote

I’ve mentioned before how I plan my outfits out about a week ahead of time and how it saves me hours in the morning when getting ready. My planning comes from not being a morning person, but I think there is something to be said about someone who puts careful consideration into their outfits. The whole idea of a power suit or “power look” isn’t just a myth. You feel better in certain outfits. Now just imagine if we all took that mindful approach to dressing every day.

T W O: A Good Dress is First of All, a Well Fitted Dress.

Christian Dior Quote

I cannot speak enough to the power of good tailoring. Let’s face it, we aren’t all Kate Middleton who can have clothes made just for us. But what else does Kate have? An amazing tailor. So even when she wears a $50 ASOS dress, it still looks amazing because it fits her so well.

T H R E E: Elegance Must be the Right Combination of Distinction, Naturalness, Care and Simplicity.

Christian Dior Quote.

Dior’s message is powerful - the key to elegance lies within the person not within their pocketbooks. His point most emphasized? Care. Care for your clothes, care in choosing them, care for your appearance, care for yourself.

F O U R: Individuality Will Always Be One of the Conditions of Real Elegance.

Christian Dior Quote

I love the emphasis Dior puts on truly knowing yourself as a key to obtaining elegance. The book discusses at length the importance of studying yourself and knowing what colors, lines and looks emphasize your best features. He also cautions avoiding trends, especially if they are not flattering for your appearance. Only wear what suits you and your personality.

F I V E: You Can Dress to Suit Yourself - and Therefore Your Age - But This Does Not Mean You have to Wear Clothes that Make You Look Old.

Christian Dior Quote

This is one of my favorite pieces of Dior’s advice. We live in a culture obsessed with youth and youthful appearances; however I think nothing is more elegant that a person who can successfully act and dress their age. Alternatively, a personal gripe of mine is someone who ages themselves in their demeanor, act, and dress. Can’t we all just agree to embrace our age [[and ourselves]]?

Navy & White: The Summer Uniform

Happy Memorial Day, all! I hope everyone had a great weekend and start to their summer. This weekend [and all summer long] I rocked my "summer uniform" aka navy and white everything. I love this color combo, it's the perfect chic summer pairing. From desk to date night or beach to BBQ, I can't get enough navy and white into my summer wardrobe. What's everyone else wearing this summer? Anyone else have a "summer uniform?"

Happy Summer!

Altuzarra x Target

It's almost here! The Altuzarra line for Target launches this Sunday and in honor of this fabulous fashion collab, I've pulled my four favorite looks from the collection.

Look 3
In this look: Structured Dress with Crane Embroidery: $49.99; Croc Effect Belt in Black: $29.99; Ankle Strap Shoe in Black: $39.99.

Why I love it: I love the attention to detail in this outfit. I mix of textures makes this dress look ultra- glam. From the tuxedo-like lapels to the gold crane embroidery across the shoulders and the subtle but sexy side split make this a not-so-basic black dress. I also love the return of wide, waist-cinching belts.

Look 6
In this look: Python Print Blazer: $49.99; Python Print Pencil Skirt: $34.99; Oxford Shirt in Banker Stripe: $29.99; Ankle Strap Shoe in Black: $39.99.

Why I love this look: Together this suit can make some bomb separates. I personally wouldn't pair the blazer and skirt together, but styled independently can really make a sartorial statement. The blazer styled with black ankle pants or cute crop are a perfect 9-5 look. Add a cami, leather blazer and some sleek ankle boots to the skirt for a perfect date night look.

Look 7
In this look: Trench Coat in Military Green/Black: $89.99; Dress in Python Print: $44.99; Ankle Strap Shoe in Black: $39.99.

Why I love this look: In my opinion, this is the crowning look of the collection. Together these pieces look great, but individually they polish off any outfit for a chic look. A classic, well-tailored trench that can be added to any outfit, a patterned dress that can be taken from day to night, all complete with the perfect pair of black pumps

Look 10
In this look: Tee Shirt in Python Print: $17.99; Flounce Skirt in Black Pointe: $34.99; Faux Croc Belt in Black: $24.99; Over-the-Knee Boot in Black: $79.99.

Why I love this look: I'll admit it, I'm a sucker for over-the-knee boots. I instantly gravitate toward any look that incorporates them. I love the juxtaposition of the ultra-feminine flounce skirt with the edgier boot. It's a great way to incorporate a little bit of edge into everyday work wear. Grab a cropped leather jacket to complete the look for post-work cocktails.

What are you faves from the collection? Share in the comments what you will be shopping for this weekend!

Fashion Meets Technoloy

Happy Monday, all! More often than not lately, I am turning to my iPhone for my fashion inspiration. Apps like Lookbook.nu allow me to see some of the radest street style looks out there, while apps like Pose and Polyvore allow me to shop all the latest looks. And maybe the most fun app of all: Plum Perfect - which allows you to take a picture of your face to match makeup to your skin color based on your desired looks (natural v. glam, etc.) I spent a good 30-45 minutes in Sephora tracking down all the products I saved on Plum Perfect - and also managed to find my new signature lip color.

Any fashion apps that you use not mentioned in the post? Leave them in the comments below!

LWDs

LWDs

Crucial for your closet this summer is the LWD (little white dress). While I personally love a great LBD (little black dress), white dresses have become not only ubiquitous with summer, but a must. Above are some of may favorite silhouettes for the summer.

The Contemporary - I love the asymmetrical hem line of this dress. The draping and jersey fabric make it a super chic look for a summer date night.

The Summer Frock - This piece can go on repeat to every barbecue, garden party, graduation party etc. The eyelet cotton makes this a super easy-to-wear piece that can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion.

The Ivory Stunner - White doesn't always have to be so white. I love the classic color and shape of this dress. Paired with the right jewelry, this dress is incredibly elegant.

The Body Con - For those daring enough to wear a white, body-hugging dress. The modest neck and hemline make this dress appropriate for all occasions.

The Ballerina - Who doesn't love living out a childhood fantasy with this dress? I love the full skirt which can really accentuate a woman's waist line in an ultra-flattering way.

The Modern Marilyn - Beware of all upward gusts. This dress is Marilyn Monroe circa 2014. The deep V and cinched waist create the hourglass shape Marilyn was known for.
